STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Congratulations are in order for Elizabeth Whittet Cruz, a principal court reporter for Supreme Court, Richmond County, on her retirement after 30 years of service in the New York state court System. For her accomplishments and to celebrate the fact that she'll officially be joining the ranks of the leisurely, Elizabeth was lauded at a party in her honor last month at Angelina's Ristorante, Tottenville.

                  All in the family

From left, Christina Cruz, a Hunter College grad who attends Stenotech Institute in Piscataway, N.J., for court reporting; her mom, Elizabeth W. Cruz, who retired as a principal court reporter from Supreme Court, Richmond County after 30 years, and her grandmother, Antoinette D. Whittet, who also retired from the Surrogate's and Supreme Court Richmond County in 1981, after 30 years of service. When Elizabeth retired, she was feted at a party in her honor last month at Angelina's Ristorante, Tottenville.

And as if that's not enough of a reason to party, Elizabeth has more to make her proud. She chose to follow in the footsteps of her mom, Antoinette D. Whittet, who retired from Supreme Court as a supervising court reporter. Mrs. Whittet was assigned to Surrogate's and Supreme Court, Richmond County, from 1951 to 1981 – and it was she who taught her daughter the meticulous skill when she was still a high-school student.

What's more, Elizabeth's daughter, Christina Cruz has now also taken to court reporting. Elizabeth goes on to explain that Christina is currently studying at Stenotech Institute, Piscataway, N.J., and is soon to make her mark in the field – with a total of three generations of court reporters in the Whittet family bonding together to serve the legal community here in Richmond County."
